Questions concerning program versions, installation and licenses

Q: Can I install SPEED Ferret additionally to previous versions on my computer?

A: Yes. You all versions can be installed at the same time on a computer.

Q: What is the difference between a upgrade and a full product?

A: The only difference is the price. An Upgrade is a full product, which you receive at a reduced price.

Q: Who is entitled to buy an SPEED Ferret upgrade.

A: Everyone who acquired a former version of the product family. You have to indicate a serial number, which we compare with our registration data base. Depending on the version you bought previously there are different price reductions.

Q: What are the contents of the SPEED Ferret package and what software do I need to run SPEED Ferret?

A: SPEED Ferret 4,0 contains all drivers for all supported platforms in one package. There are no longer different program versions. To inspect a project of a certain type, naturally the appropriate software must be installed:

In order to process projects of this type... you need this software on your system...
Microsoft Access 97 Microsoft Access 97
Microsoft Access 2000 Microsoft Access 2000 (Service Release 1 or above)
Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 ODBC 3.0 or above (see note 1)
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 ODBC 3.0 or above (see note 1)
Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0

Note 1: The SPEED Ferret SQL server driver uses ODBC. During each start, the driver tests whether ODBC 3.0 or higher is installed on your system. Many Microsoft products automatically install ODBC 3.0, like SQL server, ACCESS, Excel, or Visual basic. On Windows 2000 systems ODBC 3.0 is always available.

If you already installed one of the products mentioned, you will probably not need to install ODBC. If SPEED Ferret however reports that ODBC 3.0 is missing on your system, you must install it.

Microsoft does not supply ODBC as independent component. ODBC is only available as part of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). You can
download a free copy of MDAC from the Microsoft's MDAC web site.

Q: Are there different language versions of SPEED Ferret?

A: So far there is only an english language version of SPEED Ferret. We are collecting customer inquiries for language versions, to determine if there's a high demand for language versions. So if you think you need it, just let us know.

Q: Will I have problems to run SPEED Ferret with my own language version of Access, VB or SQL server?

A: No, you shouldn't. During the development process SPEED Ferret is always tested with many different language versions. Also programming techniques with a higher risk for language conflicts are avoided. Our own database lists customers in almost all european countries. So you can be quite sure not to run into language problems.

Q: Where do I have to keep an eye on, when working with different langage versions of Access, VB or SQL server?

A: Exactly as when programming code, you must only make sure to use the english terms for objects and values. In Microsoft Access for example, if you have a property named "Attivato = Si", the database actually stores "Enabled = Yes". The conversion in the respective language takes place when property sheets are displayed.

Questions concerning program functions and features

Q: Can I use SPEED Ferret to list all properties of a certain type, also those containing Null values?

A: Yes. SPEED Ferret 4,0 offers a new search option called "Enumerate" (list all values). By adding a filter (e.g. { *.*.Caption }) you are able to restrict the search results to a specific property or object. You can use this feature to edit all perperties of a certain type one after another.

Q: Can I use SPEED Ferret to search and replace numeric values?

A: Yes. In contrast to earlier versions, SPEED Ferret searches all sorts of properties, also those with numeric and boolean values. So you are now able for instance to change the colors of all controls, in one single operation.

Q: Can I replace a value with Null or the zero length string ("") ?

A: Yes. In earlier versions, removing the entry in the 'Replace With' column has been used to instruct SPEED Ferret not to change the value shown in that row. Now you can replace 'something with nothing'.
